It does not require batteries. You simply turn the lever and can see the gears turn and it delivers jelly beans out the front.
Reviewers say that it also works with Skittles or mini M&Ms (which would be my personal choice).
I could picture this being really cute in a lobby or conference room in an office building. When I was a teacher, I was never into giving out candy as a reward, but teachers who do enjoy that might enjoy using this (as long as it’s kept somewhere that the kids can’t easily get to it on their own!)
It comes with a very small one-ounce sample bag of 20 assorted Jelly Belly jelly bean flavors. (Just to put it in perspective, the dispenser holds 23 ounces of jelly beans.) So I would recommend including a separate container of jelly beans if you’re giving this as a gift.
